Day 1
Žovnek Castle is a castle ruin in the Savinjska region, near Braslovče in the Lower Savinja Valley. It is known as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Žovnek, the family that later rose to become the Counts of Celje. The ruin stands on a low hill above Žovnek Lake and can be reached on a short walk.
Velenje Castle is a historic castle standing on a hill above the town of Velenje in the Savinjska region of northeastern Slovenia. It is worth a visit for its elevated position overlooking the town and the surrounding valley. The castle is reached by a short walk up from the centre of Velenje, making it an easy stop on a day trip through the area.
Good to know
Celje's Old Castle is a 15-minute walk up from the car park or a shuttle in summer; the tower view is the reason to go. Žovnek is a free ruin with a short climb and a lake below for a swim. Velenje castle houses the town museum — check hours, the museum closes early.
