Day 2

Cave
Kostanjevica na Krki

This entry marks a cave near Kostanjevica na Krki, the small town in the Posavje region known for its old centre on an island in the Krka River. The karst cave lies at the edge of the hills just outside town and is a natural stop to pair with a stroll around the riverside centre. Base yourself in Kostanjevica na Krki in the lower Krka valley and reach the cave on a short trip from town.

Castle
Brežice Castle

Brežice Castle is a castle in the town of Brežice in the Posavje region of southeastern Slovenia. It is a well-known landmark of the lower Sava valley and today houses the Posavje Museum, known for its painted Knights' Hall. The castle stands in the town centre, so a visit fits easily into a stroll through Brežice.

Castle
Mokrice Castle

Mokrice Castle is a historic castle in the Posavje region of southeastern Slovenia, near the town of Brežice. It is worth a stop for its setting and the sense of the region's manorial past. The castle lies close to the Croatian border, a short drive from Brežice, and pairs well with other sights along the lower Sava valley.

Good to know

Rajhenburg and Brežice are museums with fixed opening days — check before you go, Mondays are the usual closure. Sevnica castle has vineyards on its slope and a park, fine even when the rooms are shut. The Kostanjevica cave is a guided visit on a schedule; bring a layer, it is cold inside. Mokrice is a hotel castle — the park and the view are the stop.
