Postojna Cave is a large karst cave system on the edge of the town of Postojna in the Primorsko-notranjska region. Visitors travel deep into the cave by a small underground train before continuing on foot past halls of stalactites and stalagmites, and the cave is also known as home to the olm, the blind cave salamander. It is an easy day trip from Ljubljana, and the visit is a guided underground walk on paved paths.

Karst caves and castles in a day
Slovenia's underground in one loop south of Ljubljana: the show cave at Postojna, the castle built into a cliff at Predjama, and the Snežnik manor in the forests beyond. All three are open year-round.

Day 1
Predjama Castle is a medieval fortress built into the mouth of a cave halfway up a sheer cliff face. Its setting, with the castle walls merging into the rock and a cave system behind them, makes it one of the most recognisable sights in Slovenia. It lies in the Primorsko-notranjska region, a short drive from Postojna, and is often combined with a visit to Postojna Cave.
Snežnik Castle is a medieval castle in the Primorsko-notranjska region of inner Slovenia, set in the Lož Valley area of Notranjska. It is worth a visit for its well-preserved castle architecture in a quiet rural setting surrounded by meadows and forest. The castle makes an easy stop on a day trip through the Notranjska karst region, with short level walks around the grounds.
Good to know
Postojna and Predjama sell a combined ticket, and the cave stays at 10 °C whatever the season — bring a layer. Predjama is a 15-minute drive from the cave. Snežnik is a quiet end to the day, with a park and a brown-bear forest around it.
